Last week, Lars Huffman qualified for state finals with his 4th place finish at regionals. He was ranked 52nd in Division 4 going into the race, with his personal best time. It was a very warm 70* November day, down in Brooklyn, Mi at the Michigan International Speedway. The heat was never a factor in any of our northern Michigan races this season. So he knew it was gonna be a challenge in the race. Another challenge, due to changes this year because of Covid, the race was divided into two heats. So not only was he racing with competitors in his race, but his time would place him overall with the runners from the second race. The runners in the first heat were made up of all the individual runners, and all the 3rd place teams from regionals. The second heat was made up of 1st and 2nd place teams from regionals. There were 246 runners total. Lars sprinted to the finish, passing another runner at the line, giving him the 15th place, in his heat with a time of 18:03.4. He had to wait for the second race, to see exactly how he would place, if he would be rewarded any medal spots (They medal the top 30!). Falling 18 seconds shy, his time gave him the 41st spot. “I’m happy with my placing, finishing higher than I was ranked. I’m already looking forward to next year, and setting new goals.”
Looking back at the season:
*Undefeated and 1st team in the NLC conference
*3rd place and 1st team EUP conference
*2nd place at Pre-regionals
*4th place Regionals
*41st place D4 State Finals
Great job Lars on a great season!!
